Softball Sweeps Siena on Saturday Afternoon

Pleasants Records Seven Total RBIs, Six in Game Two

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist softball team swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader against the Siena Saints at home on Saturday afternoon.
 
In game one, the Red Foxes jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first inning and never looked back, ultimately winning 9-1 in five innings. Game two started off similar as the Red Foxes started off up 2-0 after the first inning. Marist would end up winning the second game 7-2, completing the sweep and improving to an overall 18-24 with a 6-6 conference record.
 
Game One
Marist 9, Siena 1 F/5, WP: Myers (7-3) LP: Romano (3-5) 
  • The Red Foxes capitalized early as Maddie Pleasants and Alyssa Grupp each earned a bases-loaded walk to go up 2-0 in the first inning.
  • Hailee Jantorno led off the bottom of the second inning with a single to left field after battling through a 10-pitch at-bat. After Caroline Baratta walked to put two on base with two outs, Miah McDonald lined a double into the gap in left field to give the Red Foxes a 4-0 advantage.
  • Siena's Angelina Stile cut into the Marist lead with a solo home run with one out in the third inning.
  • Marist's offense caught fire in the third inning as singles from Pleasants and Maddie Gore put runners on first and second with one out in the inning. With two outs in the inning, Shea Walsh slammed a ball off the wall in right field to drive in two runs and extend the Red Foxes' lead to 6-1.
  • Sam Freeland's single down the line in left field extended the third inning and put runners on first and third with two outs. Baratta then belted a three-run home run into right-center field, giving the Red Foxes a 9-1 lead.
  • Kiley Myers completely shut down the Saints, striking out two while allowing only two hits and one run over five innings pitched. Myers walked just one and threw an efficient 54 pitches.
 
Game Two
Marist 7, Siena 2, WP: Phippen (3-4), LP: Patile (5-7)
  • Marist's offense continued to stay hot at the start of game two as Walsh led off the first inning with an infield single. Walsh then stole second the next at-bat. With two outs and runners on second and third, Pleasants singled through the gap in right-center to score Walsh and McDonald and give the Red Foxes a 2-0 lead early.
  • The Saints managed to load the bases with one out in the second inning via back-to-back walks and a hit by pitch. Calista Phippen fought her way out of the inning, causing an infield pop-out and a fly-out to left field to end in the inning.
  • Singles from Meghan Davis and Gore put runners in scoring position with one out in the third inning. Walsh then grounded out to second, but not before scoring Hannah Brock, who pinch ran for Davis, to give Marist a 3-0 lead.
  • After McDonald walked with one out in the fourth inning, Pleasants slammed a two-run home run into left-center field to extend the Red Foxes' lead to 5-0.
  • Pleasants stayed hot in the fifth inning, scoring two runs off an RBI double that hit off the center field wall to put Marist up 7-0.
  • Siena tried to get something going late, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh off an infield single, but it wasn't enough as the Red Foxes won game two 7-2.
  • Phippen pitched a gem in game two, striking out five while only allowing two runs (one earned) over seven innings.
 
Stats
  • Eight different Red Foxes recorded a hit in game one of the doubleheader.
  • Baratta led the Red Foxes in game one, going 2-for-2 with a three-run home run.
  • McDonald and Freeland each recorded a double with two RBIs in game one.
  • The top three in the Marist lineup (Walsh, Freeland, Baratta) each scored two runs apiece in game one.
  • Maddie Pleasants dominated game two, going 3-for-3 with a double, a home run, and six RBIs. She totaled seven RBIs on the day.
  • McDonald scored three runs in game two.

  • The Red Foxes will head down to Riverdale for a mid-week doubleheader against the Manhattan Jaspers on Wednesday.
