Grupp Notches Seven-Hit Day, But Softball Falls Twice

Red Foxes Drop Pair of Slugfests at Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – The Marist softball team dropped a pair of high-scoring non-conference games at Drexel of the Colonial Athletic Association on Tuesday. The Dragons prevailed 12-11 in eight innings in game one, and 9-6 in game two.
 
Marist's Alyssa Grupp totaled seven hits in the doubleheader, going 7-for-8 with four runs scored, four RBIs, three doubles, two stolen bases, and a walk.
 
Sam Freeland totaled five hits, three runs, and three RBIs in the two games. Miah McDonald had four hits on the day, and Maddie Gore drove in four runs.
 
Game One
  • In the second inning, Grupp took third on the front end of a double steal with Gore, and scored on a throwing error.
  • Marist then scored six times in the fourth. The inning included two-run singles from Grupp and Freeland, an RBI double from Caroline Baratta, and an RBI single from Hailee Jantorno. Grupp had two hits in the inning.
  • Drexel countered with a six-run fifth to cut its deficit to one. The Dragons then took the lead with a three-run sixth, which included a two-run homer from Jackie Masone.
  • Grupp doubled to lead off the seventh, and Gore followed with her first collegiate homer, which tied the game at nine apiece.
  • Freeland and Grupp had RBI singles in the top of the eighth, but Drexel scored three times in the bottom half of the inning to win the game.
  • Drexel had 15 hits, while Marist had 13.
  • Grupp went 5-for-5 with three runs scored, three RBIs, two doubles, and two stolen bases. Freeland went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
 
Game Two
  • Megan Trivelpiece's bases-loaded walk brought home Sarah Clinton and gave Drexel a 1-0 lead in the first.
  • McDonald led off the top of the second with a double, and later scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Hannah Brock.
  • Ameryn Humble's three-run double keyed a four-run second for Drexel.
  • Drexel tacked on two more runs in the fourth to advance its lead to 7-1.
  • Marist cut its deficit in half with a three-run fifth. Baratta had a two-run double, and scored on a groundout by Gore.
  • The Dragons extended their lead to 9-4 with a two-run sixth.
  • Marist scored twice in the seventh. With two outs, McDonald singled and scored on a double by Grupp, who then scored on a double by Gore.
  • McDonald finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Freeland and Grupp had two hits apiece. Gore and Baratta drove in two apiece.

  • Marist opens its home schedule with back-to-back doubleheaders against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foes Iona and Fairfield on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
  • First pitch of game one is set for noon on both days.
