Red Foxes Enter Tournament as #2 Seed

POMONA, New York – The second-seeded Marist Red Foxes will begin the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Baseball Championship on Thursday afternoon at Clover Stadium.

 
Schedule
  • The MAAC Championship uses a double elimination format.
  • Marist will open play against third-seeded Canisius on Thursday at 3 p.m. This game, and all contests in the championship, will be carried live on ESPN+.
    • If Marist defeats Canisius, the Red Foxes will advance to play the winner of #5 Rider and #1 Fairfield on Friday at 11 a.m.
    • If the Red Foxes fall to Canisius, they will play either at 7 p.m. on Thursday, or 3 p.m. on Friday in an elimination game.
 
At a Glance
  • Marist enters the championship at 29-15 overall, and went 17-5 in MAAC regular-season play.
  • Marist enters the championship with as winners of 11 out of their last twelve, with the lone loss coming at Central Connecticut State, 11-10. Prior to the loss to Central Connecticut State, the Red Foxes held the longest active win streak in the entire nation.
  • Marist's lone MAAC series loss came to Canisius on April 14-16. Marist went on to win 12 of its last 14 games following that series. 
  • The 29 wins this season tie the most regular season wins since the 2017 Red Foxes, who went on to win the MAAC Tournament. 
  • Pitchers Erubiel Candelario and Alex Pansini finished the regular season tied for the MAAC lead in wins, with eight each. Pansini finished with the fifth most strikeouts (85) and Candelario finished sixth (82). Pansini was second in ERA with a 3.86.
  • Offensively, Marist led the MAAC with a .298 team batting average, led in runs scored (377 total, 8.56 per game), led in doubles with 209, triples with 15, RBIs with 340, and an OB% of .397. Gavin Noreiga finished third in the MAAC with a .368 batting average, and Gene Napolitano was fourth with a .362 BA. Robbie Armitage was the MAAC leader in RBIs with 58 on the season. Armitage also was tied for the lead in doubles with 18.  Brian Hart was tied for the lead with 6 triples and tied for 3rd with 15 doubles. 
  • Marist scored a MAAC single-game high 24 runs against Iona on April 30.
  • In its last 10games, Marist scored 122 runs, averaging 12.2 runs per game during that stretch.
 
Championship History
  • Marist has won six MAAC championships in its history: 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2009, and most recently 2017.
  • Last time Marist entered the tournament as the two seed, they won the tournament in 2017 and advanced to the Gainesville Regional. 
Championship Field
  • Marist went 1-2 in its first series with Fairfield, losing game one in extra innings 13-10. The Red Foxes bounced back with an 8-4 win in game two, but fell in game three, 7-4.
  • Against Canisius, Marist went 1-2 in Buffalo in high scoring affairs. In game one, Marist put up twelve runs but fell, 17-12. In game two, the offense outlasted Canisius', winning 18-17 before falling 11-3 in game three.
  • The Red Foxes swept Monmouth on the road, exploding for 26 runs in three games. The Red Foxes won 5-4, 8-3, and 13-6, respectively.
  • Marist had two contests canceled with Rider, but won the only game 13-1 in a dominant performance with featured 18 hits from the Red Foxes and shutdown pitching from Pansini, Candelario, and Drake Quinn.
  • Marist did not face Niagara this season, but in 2021 the teams split a four-game series.
