Marist Rowing Makes Waves at Head of the Charles Regatta

Alumni and Current Men's Crew Partake in the Annual Event

BOSTON, Massachusetts -  The Marist men's rowing team took part in the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta this past weekend.

Recap

Started in 1965 (when Marist was one of the first colleges to attend the event) the Head of the Charles Regatta has grown over the years to be the largest rowing regatta on the planet. This year's event hosted over 11,000 athletes in categories ranging from Under 17 youth events to Grand Veterans. (over 85 yrs old) Racing is conducted over a three mile long course along the Charles Rivers winding between Boston and Cambridge, MA in a "Head Race" or time trial style where athletes race in single file in an effort to obtain the best time down the course.

Saturday, the race course played host to a wide variety of masters and alumni races. Marist Men's Rowing was here on display with three different crews representing three generations of Marist oarsmen. Conditions were flat water and minimal wind but with rain increasing throughout racing with temperatures in the low 60's.

Our first lineup raced in the "Senior Masters" (50+) Eights. The lineup consisted of: Claire Connally '20 (coxswain), Owen McGovern '94 (7), Warren Mead '93 (5), Pete Tartaglia '94 (4), John Garrity '91 (3), Jim Foley '82 (2), Pete Zimmerman '01 (Bow). Special thanks to Syracuse Grads Mike Levy '91 and Colin Goodale '89 who filled in at stroke and 6 respectively. This boat completed the course in a time of 18:24.002 to place 28th of 31 crews just behind Concord Crew and ahead of East Bay Rowing Inc.

The next lineup race in the "Grand Masters" (60+) Eights as a Veteran (70+) crew. The lineup consisted of: Matthew Wright '26 (Coxswain), Greg Nesteroke '70 (stroke), Dave Rowan '81 (7), Jim Cockroft '73 (5), Bob Creedon '74 (4), Larry Carr '68 (3), Marty Torrey '72 (bow), and special thanks to Mike Griffin '81 of University of Hartford and John McCleary '74 from LaSalle for filling in at 6 and 2 respectively. The crew completed the course in a time of 24:237.543 and placed 28th in their category.

The Final lineup for Saturday was the Men's Alumni Eight (open age). This lineup consisted of: Ryan Lillis '18 (Coxswain), Dmitrey Guenther '21 (stroke), Tadd Bindas '19 (7), Morgan Stippa '18 (6), Nathan Jalbert '22 (5), Liam Cusack '23 (4), Alexander Missert '22 (3), Raymond Mattingly '19 (2), and Sam Klamar '17 (Bow). This crew completed the course in a time of 15:38.595 placing 18th out of 48 crews just ahead of St Joe's Alumni and just behind Princeton's "Fat Cat" crew.

Sunday saw the current Marist Oarsmen rowing in the "Collegiate Eights" division. Temps were in the low 60's again but the rain was replaced by considerable blustery head winds throughout the course. The Marist lineup consisted of  Kayla Lewis (coxswain), Gavin Crouch (stroke), Holden Kopscik (7), Mason Roy (6), Nolan Libby (5), Liam Klemm (4), Andrew Davis (3), Thomas Graves (2), Drew Ngo (bow). The Marist Crew pulled a time of 16:46.146 and placed 33rd of 42 crews.

Coach's Comments

"The Head of the Charles is an amazing event and one that always energizes our entire team from our youngest recruits to our oldest alumni. It was exciting to spend three days in Boston seeing the past, present, and future of our team perform on the water. Our veteran crew was truly an honor to watch and we were excited to get them an opportunity to row again after so many years. Some of these crew members were in the winning crew back in 1972! The Senior Masters were back together for many of them for the first time in a long time and this too was awesome to see them reconnecting with old class mates as well as the older and younger generations. The alumni eight had the strongest performance of the weekend and showed what made these oarsmen such a force to be reckoned with during their years at Marist. For the varsity crew we were admittedly disappointed in our performance and the coaches felt that the blustery conditions may have played a role in disrupting the rhythm of the crew. With one more race in the fall season we'll be looking for a course correction in the coming weekend at the Head of the Fish Regatta." - Campbell Woods, Head Coach, Men's Rowing

A special thanks to the Head of the Charles Regatta for putting on a fantastic event in difficult conditions this year as well as all who helped our alumni rows possible, especially our three listed coxswains, our alumni boat members and Bob Missert our alumni organizer.
