POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist volleyball team was defeated by Canisius 3-1 in its final home match of the season on Sunday afternoon.
 

Senior Day

Marist honored the team's six seniors with a ceremony prior to the start of the match.

Those six seniors being:

• 5, Sasha van der Merwe
• 7, Kendall O'Brien
• 9, Anne Mahler
• 10, Gabriella Heimbauer
• 16, Jordan Newblatt
• 17, Vanessa Zolg

Recap

• Although Canisius looked like they were in full control at the beginning of the first set, Marist battled back and took the lead. Despite this, Marist eventually fell to Canisius 26-24.
• The second set was an entirely different story as the Red Foxes stormed out to a 7-0 lead. The Griffs were unable to battle back and the Red Foxes won the second set 25-16 after a kill by Jordan Newblatt.
• The third set was tightly contested as the Red Foxes attempted to capitalize on the momentum from winning the second set. They were unable to replicate the second set as they dropped the third 25-23.
• The Griffs were ultimately able to secure the 3-1 match victory after taking a highly competitve fourth set 25-23.

Stats

• Sasha van der Merwe hit for .348 while tallying a double-double with 19 kills and 11 digs.
• Katherine Thompson had 27 digs, two assists and two service aces.
• Vanessa Zolg had seven kills and three total blocks.
• Jordan Newblatt collected a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs.

Notes

• Sasha van der Merwe now has 1,033 career kills.
• This ranks her seventh all-time for total kills by a Red Fox.
