Men’s Basketball Opens Season Monday Night at Army

Hudson Valley Rivals Tip Off at 8 p.m.

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's basketball team opens its 43rd season as a Division I program, and 63rd season overall, with a road contest against Army West Point from the Patriot League on Monday night. Tip-off at Christl Arena is set for 8 p.m.
 
On the Air
  • The game will be carried on the Red Fox Network and Varsity Network app with Dean Darling (play-by-play) and Steve Eggink (analyst) on the call.
  • The pre-game show will start at 7:45.
  • The game will be shown live on ESPN+.
 
Last Year, This Year
  • Marist advanced to the MAAC Championship final for the first time in program history last year, and reached a conference final for the first time since 1992.
  • Marist returns three starters and seven scholarship players from a year ago, which comprise 58 percent of the Red Foxes' scoring from last year.
  • The seven returning scholarship players who saw action last year are: graduate forward Javon Cooley, senior guard Kam Farris, junior guard Noah Harris, sophomore guard Isaiah Brickner, sophomore forward Jaden Daughtry, sophomore forward Matt McCool, sophomore forward Trace Salton. The Red Foxes also have a returning walk-on in sophomore forward Mack Wall.
  • On the coaching staff, head coach John Dunne and assistant coach Dalip Bhatia are returning for their sixth season on staff. Drew Metz is in his third season on staff, and Brandon Hall is in his second.
  • The Red Foxes were picked to finish eight in this season's MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, with Isaiah Brickner named Preseason Second Team All-MAAC.
 
Who's New
  • Marist has six new players this year, with three transfers and three freshmen.
  • The transfers are Isaiah Sulack (graduate, last three years at Tennessee); Jackson Price (junior, last two years at The Citadel); and Max Allen II (sophomore, last year at San Jose State).
  • The Red Foxes' scholarship freshmen are guard Jadin Collins, guard Josh Pascarelli, and forward Jason Schofield.
  • Derrick Phelps joins the staff as an assistant coach. Phelps played on North Carolina's 1993 national championship team.
 
Out of Conference
  • Marist will play three home games and six road contests in this year's non-conference schedule.
  • Marist has three Patriot League teams on the schedule: Army (road, Nov. 6, picked 10th); Bucknell (home, Nov. 25, picked ninth); and Lehigh (home, Dec. 30, picked second).
  • Marist will face three straight America East teams, all on the road: UMBC (Nov. 11, picked sixth); Binghamton (Nov. 18, picked fourth); and New Hampshire (Nov. 21, eighth).
  • Marist travels to Ivy League foe Dartmouth (picked seventh) on Dec. 9.
  • Marist hosts University of Maryland Eastern Shore (picked sixth) of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on Dec. 18.
  • Marist travels to ACC foe Notre Dame (picked 15th) on Dec. 22. Marist last faced Notre Dame in 2004 and last faced an ACC team in 2016 (Duke).
 
Openers
  • In its Division I history, Marist is 17-25 in season openers, including a 3-2 record under head coach John Dunne.
  • Marist dropped 10 straight season openers from 2009-18, but has won three of the last four.
  • Marist's Nov. 6 season opener ties its earliest in program history. The Red Foxes also started on Nov. 6 in 2018, which was John Dunne's first game as head coach of the Red Foxes.
  • Marist has opened the season on the road in 14 of the last 19 seasons, including this one.
  • Marist will play its first four games on the road this season. This is the Red Foxes' longest stretch away from home to start a season since 2011-12, when Marist also played its first four games away from McCann Arena.
 
Vs. Army
  • Marist is 10-11 against Army West Point all-time. The Red Foxes have faced Army more than any team it has never shared a conference with.
  • Army leads the all-time series in points scored 1,505-1,500.
  • The Black Knights have won five straight in the series.
  • The last three meetings have all been decided by four points or less.
 
About Army
  • Army West Point finished last season at 17-16 overall.
  • The Black Knights went 10-8 in Patriot League play and advanced to the semifinal round of the league tournament.
