POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist women's basketball team earned a 76-68 victory against Army West Point in the season opener at McCann Arena on Thursday night.

Summary

On the first possession of the game Jackie Piddock got the scoring going for Marist as she buried a catch-and-shoot three-point attempt from the corner.
The Red Foxes trailed 18-15 at the end of the first quarter. Despite coming out hot and shooting 60% from the field, including 3-of-5 from downtown, costly mishaps led to Army scoring 10 points off turnovers in the opening frame.
Marist utilized an 8-0 run which was capped off by a Zaria Shazer jumper to take a 26-20 lead with 5:30 to go in the second.
A 7-0 run gave the Red Foxes their first double-digit lead at 33-22 with 3:04 remaining in the second quarter.
Marist took a 40-30 lead into the locker room at halftime. Catie Cunningham led the way in the first half with 12 points and five rebounds.
The third quarter saw back-and-forth action with neither team being able to create much separation.
An and-one from Cunningham at the 1:04 mark ended a three-minute scoring drought for Marist and gave them a 55-48 lead. The Red Foxes took a five point lead into the fourth quarter.
The game stayed close and Army used a 6-0 run over 2:40 to shrink Marist's lead to two at 64-62 with two minutes left in the game.
Shazer responded in a big way for the Red Foxes, hitting a jumper and then knocking down two free throws to extend the lead to six with 1:07 remaining.
The Red Foxes made seven consecutive free throws to close the game out 76-68.

Stats

Cunningham recorded a double-double with a career-high 17 points and 12 rebounds. She also had two steals and a block.
Shazer finished with a team-high 21 points to go along with eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and one steal.
Jackie Piddock scored a career-high 17 points including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc to go along with another career-high six rebounds, three assists, and a team-high three steals.
Kiara Fisher also recorded a double-double as she chipped in with 10 points and tied her career-high with 10 assists to go along with two blocks and a steal.
Marist held Army to .361 shooting (26-for-72) from the field and a .259 mark (7-for-27) from three-point range.
The Red Foxes shot .460 (23-for-50) from the field and .375 (6-for-16) from three.
