Softball Splits on Opening Day

Phippen Earns 40th Career Win, Ahr Belts Walk-Off Homer vs. North Carolina A&T

ROCK HILL, South Carolina – The Marist softball team split its two games as the Red Foxes opened their season Friday at the Winthrop Eagle Classic.
 
The Red Foxes defeated North Carolina A&T 9-1 in six innings in game one, and fell to North Carolina A&T
 
Game One
  • Marist opened up a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Shea Walsh scored on a passed ball, and Haley Ahr's two-run single brought home Alyssa Grupp and Maddie Pleasants.
  • The Red Foxes added three more in the third. Meghan Davis' RBI single brought home Maddie Pleasants. Isabella Manory's sacrifice fly scored Alyssa Grupp, and then Davis came home on an infield single by Hannah Brock.
  • After North Carolina A&T got on the board in the top of the sixth, Marist closed out the game in the bottom half of Haley Ahr's first collegiate home run, a three-run shot.
  • Ahr finished 2-for-3 with five RBIs.
  • Grupp was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
  • Calista Phippen went all six innings for her 40th career win. Phippen retired the first 12 batters she faced and struck out eight. She allowed just three hits and one walk.
  • The game marked Joe Ausanio's 700th as head coach of the Red Foxes.
 
Game Two
  • Marist scored first in the top of the second. Following a single by Peyton Pusey, Ahr scored on an error.
  • Winthrop took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the third on a grand slam by KaDedra Temple.
  • The Eagles extended their lead to 5-1 in the fifth, but the Red Foxes quickly answered with two in the top of the sixth. Pleasants led off with a single, and then pinch-runner Ronni Howard scored on Ahr's double. Later in the inning, Kaitlyn Husic reached on a fielder's choice, which scored Brock.
  • The Red Foxes had runners on second and third with one out in the top of the seventh, but were unable to score.
  • Sam Freeland, Pleasants, Ahr, and Pusey each had two hits.
  • Kiley Myers started and struck out eight in four innings. Meghan Haff struck out three and allowed just one hit in two innings of scoreless relief.

  • Marist continues play in the Winthrop Eagle Classic with two games on Saturday.
  • The Red Foxes play Queens College at 10 a.m., followed by Nevada at 12:30 p.m.
