Softball Drops Two at Winthrop Eagle Classic

Red Foxes Fall 7-6 to Queens, 2-0 to Nevada

ROCK HILL, South Carolina – The Marist softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday at the Winthrop Eagle Classic. The Red Foxes fell 7-6 to Queens College of Charlotte in their first game, and 2-0 to Nevada in their second game.
 
Marist is now 1-3 on the season.
 
Game One
  • Reese Wilson hit her first collegiate home run on the first pitch of the second inning to give Marist a 1-0 lead over Queens.
  • Back-to-back homers by Hayley Hmiel and Katie Smith gave Queens a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second.
  • Marist took the lead back with a three-run third. Sam Freeland, Alyssa Grupp, and Haley Ahr led off the inning with consecutive singles. Isabella Manory was hit by a pitch to force home Freeland. Hannah Brock's two-run single brought home Grupp and Ahr.
  • Queens took a 5-4 lead with a three-run fourth that included a two-run single by Ashlyn Mickler.
  • In the top of the fifth, Manory reached on a one-out double, and came out around to score the tying run.
  • Kaylee DeJesus's two-run single gave Queens a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Grupp was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the seventh, and scored on an error to make it 7-6. The Red Foxes had runners on first and second with one out, but were unable to push across the tying run.
  • Ahr and Wilson each drove in two runs.
  • Grupp scored two runs.
  • Maddie Pleasants started and struck out a career-high nine in four-plus innings. Kiley Myers went the final two in relief.
 
Game Two
  • Marist loaded the bases in the top of the fourth with two outs, but was unable to score.
  • Nevada had second and third with two outs in the fifth, but Calista Phippen recorded a strikeout to get out of the inning.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Aaliyah Jenkins' two-run homer provided the only runs of the game.
  • Phippen pitched a five-hitter and struck out seven. She walked just one.
  • Pleasants, Grupp, and Kaitlyn Husic had the Red Foxes' three hits.
