Women’s Basketball Prepares for MAAC Championship

Red Foxes Open Championship Play Tuesday Afternoon Against Rider

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist women's basketball team closed out the regular season on Saturday, finishing 12-17 overall and 8-12 in conference play. Marist finished in seventh place in the MAAC this season, and will open play in the 2023 Hercules Tires MAAC Basketball Championships on Tuesday against Rider. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
 
Season Highlights
  • Kiara Fisher broke the school and MAAC single game record scoring 44 points against Mount St. Mary's.
  • Shazer led the conference in scoring against conference opponents averaging 17.25 points per game. Zaria is fourth in the conference in rebounds per game (7.70) against conference opponents.
  • All of Marist's game highs for the season are against conference opponents except, Free throw percentage and fouls.
  • Marist took down first place Iona in their final matchup of the regular season.
  • Head Coach Brian Giorgis collected his 300th MAAC career win this season on the road at Manhattan. Giorgis is in his 21st and final season as the Marist women's basketball coach. His career record as a head coach sits at 463-202.

MAAC Championship
  • The Red Foxes earned the seventh seed in the MAAC Championship. Their first-round opponent will be #10 Rider.
  • Iona, Niagara, Quinnipiac, Siena and Fairfield earned a first-round bye.
  • All games will be available to stream on ESPN+.
  • The Red Foxes won the MAAC every year from 2006-2014. They lead the conference with 11 all-time MAAC Championships.
 
First Round Opponent
  • Marist was defeated by Rider twice this season, one was on Saturday, March 4th to close out the season.
  • In the last outing, Rider defeated Marist in overtime by a score of 66-63.
  • Zaria Shazer led the Red Foxes with 25 points.
  • Kiara Fisher tallied 14 points, along with five assists and three steals.
  • Catie Cunningham and Samantha Bailey had a game high of nine rebounds.
  • Rider outrebounded Marist 40-35.
  • Marist shot .371 from the field and .235 from three. While Rider shot .385 from the field and .227 from behind the arc.
