Softball Earns Sweep Against Niagara

Red Foxes Win 8-0 & 7-3

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist softball team earned a conference doubleheader sweep against Niagara on Monday. The Red Foxes won the first game 8-0 in five innings. The second game went the full seven innings as Marist won 7-3. 

Calista Phippen struck out a season-high 10 batters in the first game while only allowing two hits. Kiley Myers didn't allow an earned run as she went the distance with five strikeouts and no walks in game two.

Game One
  • Peyton Pusey got the hitting started for the Red Foxes with a double to center field and then she stole third base. Sam Freeland followed with a single up the middle for the first RBI of the day.
  • Haley Ahr singled up the middle to advance Freeland, who then stole home.
  • Maddie Pleasants hit a two-run homer to give the Red Foxes a 4-0 lead. Alyssa Grupp followed that up with a single to second base and ultimately scored after an Isabella Manory sacrifice bunt to make it 5-0 after one inning.
  • In the second, Ahr hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Pusey, who reached on a single down the left field line. Pleasants hit an RBI-single to score Freeland, who reached on a fielders choice, to make it 7-0 after two.
  • Pleasants walked it off in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to finish 3-for-3 with four RBIs.
  • Pusey and Freeland each went 2-for-3
Game Two
  • In the bottom of the second, Hannah Brock reached on a fielder's choice to score Alyssa Grupp who reached first on an error. Isabella Manory who singled to first base with a bunt, scored on a Ronni Howard RBI single. Peyton Pusey followed that with an RBI single of her own before Sam Freeland hit an RBI triple to put the Red Foxes up 4-0.
  • Haley Ahr reached first on a fielding error, allowing Freeland to score and make it 5-0 after two.
  • In the third, Niagara scored its only three runs of the day thanks to back-to-back doubles with two outs.
  • Pusey hit a solo home run to right field to put the Red Foxes up 6-3 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Howard hit her second RBI single of the game to score Grupp, who reached on a walk.
  • Pusey, Freeland, and Howard had two hits apiece.
Records
  • Marist improves to 13-19 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
  • Niagara drops to 2-19 and 0-4 in the MAAC.

  • The Red Foxes continue their seven-game homestand as they face off against non-conference opponent Cornell on Wednesday, April 5.
