Volleyball Falls Short Against UC Davis

Sasha van der Merwe Posts Double-Double with 15 Kills and 11 Digs

LOS ANGELES, California - The Marist women's volleyball team fell in its final match of Trojan Invitational at USC. The UC Davis Aggies captured the first two sets, but the Red Foxes stormed back winning the next two, forcing a fifth and final set. Ultimately, the Aggies prevailed.
 
Recap
  • In set one, UC Davis jumped out an early 11-5 lead. The Red Foxes capitalized on a couple of errors by the Aggies, and kills from Anne Mahler and Gabriella Heimbauer brought Marist within two (11-9).
  • The two teams continued to battle back-and-forth and Marist got within one point on another kill from Anne Mahler (17-16), but the Aggies used an 8-1 run to close out the Red Foxes and take set one 25-16.
  • UC Davis opened the second set with a 7-3 run, forcing Marist to call an early timeout. Another mini run pushed the Aggies lead to 11-4 as the Red Foxes called another timeout.
  • The Red Foxes got within four after an Aggie attack error, but a 10-2 run pushed the UC Davis lead to 21-8. The Aggies used a 4-1 run to close out the second set by a score of 25-9.
  • In set three, the Red Foxes jumped out to an early 6-1 lead on a kill by Sasha van der Merwe. The Aggies stormed back and tied the game at seven apiece.
  • An incredible rally was capped off by an Emi Yakushev kill to give Marist a 13-11 lead. The two teams continued to jostle back-and-forth with neither team creating much separation as Marist went on to win it, 28-26.
  • The Red Foxes continued to play with confidence and force in the fourth set. The two teams battled closely early on, but a mini run capped off by a Vanessa Zolg service ace gave Marist a 16-10 lead.
  • The Red Foxes extended their lead to double-digits at 23-13 and went on to take the fourth set, 25-16.
  • In the fifth set, the Aggies jumped out to an early 6-1 lead and didn't look back as they closed out the final set by a score of 15-6.
