RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Senior
Zaria Shazer scored a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds, however, it wasn't enough as Marist women's basketball came up short on the road against Manhattan, 60-54, Thursday evening inside Draddy Gymnasium.
With the loss, Marist fell to 5-13 on the campaign and 3-5 in the MAAC, while Manhattan improved to 13-4 overall and 6-2 in conference play on the 2023-24 season.
Both sides got off to slow starts offensively, with Manhattan holding a 6-2 lead through the first five minutes of action. However, the Red Foxes outscored the Jaspers 11-4 the rest of the frame to carry a 13-10 lead into the second.
The Jaspers opened the second quarter with a swift 6-0 run to take a 16-13 lead with eight minutes left in the half. The Red Foxes responded with a 7-3 run, sparked by a Morgan Lee three-pointer to push ahead 20-19. However, Manhattan countered with a 5-0 run of their own to take a 24-20 lead into the media timeout at 3:09.
The two sides traded a three-pointer apiece late in the half with Manhattan carrying a 27-23 advantage into halftime.
The Jaspers held the Red Foxes to just one made field goal in the frame, taking a 37-29 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Red Foxes opened the fourth with a quick 5-0 run to trim the deficit to three.
However, Manhattan countered with a 6-0 run of their own to force a Marist timeout trailing 43-34 with 7:21 remaining in regulation. Out of timeout, the Red Foxes went on a 6-0 run to trim the deficit back down to 43-40 before Manhattan took a 46-40 advantage into the media timeout with four minutes remaining in regulation. After back-to-back three-point plays from
Catie Cunningham and
Lexie Tarul, the Red Foxes were able to cut the deficit to 53-50 with a minute left in the contest.
Marist was able to cut the deficit to one after
Julia Corsentino drained a three-pointer with 24.7 seconds left in regulation.
However, it wasn't enough, as Manhattan held on for the 60-54 victory over Marist.

- The Red Foxes will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 1 when Marist returns home to Poughkeepsie to play host to MAAC rival Quinnipiac
