Dasic Tallies 13 Kills in Red Foxes' Loss at Niagara

Volleyball Falls in Four Sets at Niagara in MAAC Opener

NIAGARA, N.Y. – Marist women's volleyball came up short in its first match of conference play, as the Niagara Purple Eagles defeated the Red Foxes in four sets inside the Gallagher Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
Sarah Dasic led Marist with 14 kills in the loss, while Trinity Woods notched eight kills and two blocks in the contest. The Red Foxes also got a strong effort from Jamison White, who had a team-leading 41 assists, along with seven digs and two service aces.
 
With the loss, the Red Foxes fell to 0-11 overall on the season as their MAAC road trip continues against Canisius tomorrow, Sunday September 28th at 1 p.m.

Set One - (25-20, Niagara)

The first set was highly contested early on with neither team being able to separate on the scoreboard. Marist held a 15-14 lead going into the media timeout.
 
After Niagara took an 18-16 lead, Marist called their first timeout. The set was tied 19-19, but the Purple Eagles went on a 6-1 run to close out to roll to a 25-20 set victory.
 
Set Two - (16-25, Marist)

The second set began similarly to the first set, a back-and-forth affair with neither team being able to separate on the scoreboard. The Red Foxes held a 15-13 lead going into the media timeout.
 
The Red Foxes returned from the break hot, going on a three-point run to extend the lead to 18-13, forcing Niagara to call their first timeout of the set.
 
The Purple Eagles were unable to slow down the Red Foxes' momentum, as Marist rolled to a 25-16 set victory.
 
Set Three - (25-23, Niagara)

Niagara came storming out of the gates in the third set, jumping off to a 9-4 lead before Marist called a timeout.
 
Niagara continued to build their lead, extending going ahead 12-6 before Marist called another timeout.
 
With Niagara looking poised to win the set in dominant fashion, the Red Foxes flipped the script, going on a 7-2 run late in the set to tie the game at 17-17.
 
The Red Foxes were able to keep the game within striking distance, but the late effort wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit as the Purple Eagles were able to hold on for the 25-23 set win.
 
Set Four - (25-13, Niagara)

Niagara opened the set taking four of the first five points, forcing a Marist timeout down 4-1, and the Red Foxes were never able to recover from the early deficit.
 
Niagara maintained a 10-6 lead as Marist called their second timeout, and returning from the break, the Purple Eagles continued to add to their large lead, going on a 9-1 run to widen the gap to 19-7.
 
The Bobcats weren't able to keep up with the Purple Eagles, as Niagara rolled to a 25-13 set win and match victory.
 
Notes
  • With the loss, Marist falls to 0-11 on the season.
  •  Niagara is tied with Canisius for the conference lead, with both teams at 5-7 overall and   1-0 in conference play.
  • Jamison White led the Red Foxes with 41 assists.
  • Sarah Bumstead led all players in the contest with a .600 hitting percentage.
  • Marist had three players notch double-digit kills: Sara Dasic (14), Sarah Bumstead (13) and Taylor Miller (12)
  • Cecilia Potter-Pessoa led the team with 14 digs.
  • Claudia Kasperski led the team with three service aces.
Next Time Out
  • The Red Foxes will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 29, when they take on Canisius on the road
  • First serve is set for noon on ESPN+
