Fairfield Pulls Away in Second Half to Defeat Marist, 5-1

Marist Suffers First Setback of the Season as Stags Surge After Halftime

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist men's soccer struck first, but Fairfield responded with five unanswered goals to hand the Red Foxes a 5-1 defeat on Wednesday night at Tenney Stadium.

The Red Foxes (6-1-2, 2-1-0 MAAC) opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Kyle Evans netted his third goal of the season on an unassisted strike. The Stags answered before halftime, however, as Sean Albritton converted in the 31st minute to send the match into the break tied, 1-1.

Fairfield (4-4-1, 2-1-0 MAAC) seized control early in the second half. Alex Vaz scored twice in the opening four minutes after the restart, putting the visitors ahead 3-1. The Stags kept the pressure on, adding goals from Cameron Gerber in the 64th minute and Illia Tyrkus in the 74th to pull away.

Marist tallied 17 shots in the match, with nine on target, and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Fairfield goalkeeper Evan Chomow made seven saves to backstop the win, while Marist's Jamie Lowell finished with one save in just under 79 minutes of action.

The Red Foxes will look to bounce back this weekend when they travel to face conference foe Niagara on Saturday, October 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Western New York.
