POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist volleyball team earned a gritty five-set victory over Manhattan on Friday night at McCann Arena, rallying behind strong offensive balance and timely defense to claim a 3–2 win (18-25, 25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 15-10).
After dropping the opening set, the Red Foxes responded with back-to-back wins in sets two and three, paced by key kills from Sara Dasic (21 kills, 7 digs) and Sarah Bumstead (12 kills). Setter Claire Lewis ran the offense with precision, dishing out 29 assists to go along with a team-high 16 digs.
Manhattan forced a decisive fifth set after taking the fourth, but Marist seized the momentum early in the final frame. Ava Lanzetta and Mallory Reck provided key kills to spark the Red Foxes, while Cecilia Potter-Pessoa anchored the defense with 26 digs and contributed four assists.
Marist hit .290 in the fourth set and .083 in the fifth, but their defense held strong, recording 67 digs and four team blocks on the night. Manhattan was led by Fiona VanDyke (18 kills) and Hanna Kaczynska (18 kills), but the Red Foxes' resilience in the decisive points proved the difference.
With the win, Marist improves to 4-11 overall and 3-1 in MAAC play, while Manhattan falls to 2-11 and 0-4 in conference.
The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, October 4, when they host Iona at 6 p.m. inside McCann Arena.
