POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist University football team earned two Pioneer Football League weekly awards following the Red Foxes' 19-14 victory over San Diego on Saturday.
Nate Furrow was honored as PFL Defensive Player of the Week, and
Jeremy DeCaro earned PFL Special Teams Player of the Week.
Furrow had five tackles for loss, including three sacks, among his eight total tackles and six solo stops in Saturday's game. On San Diego's final drive, Furrow recorded sacks on the Toreros' final two offensive plays on third down and fourth down, resulting in a turnover on downs and enabling Marist to run out the clock. Two drives earlier, San Diego took over at the Marist 27 down five points following a punt. Furrow recorded consecutive tackles on first down, second down, and third down. The last of the three was for a loss of two yards on third-and-one, and San Diego turned the ball over on downs on the next play. In the second quarter, Furrow recorded his first sack of the game on third down, which led to a punt on the following play.
Furrow's five tackles for loss were the most by a Red Fox since Landon Moore against Mercer in 2013, and his three sacks were the most by a Red Fox since Alex Spiess had three against Stetson in 2015.
DeCaro totaled 87 yards in punt returns, averaging 12.4 yards on seven returns on Saturday. He had returns of 14, 18, 20, and 21 yards. His longest return set Marist up at its 48, and the Red Foxes scored a touchdown five plays later that put them up for good. With a career-high 53 yards receiving on five catches, which tied a career high, DeCaro tallied 140 all-purpose yards.
These are the first PFL weekly awards that both Furrow and DeCaro have won. Marist has now earned four league awards this season.
Nate Robinson Jr. (Defensive Player of the Week) and
Tristan Shannon (Special Teams Player of the Week) were both honored on Sept. 14 following the Red Foxes' win at Wagner.
Marist (3-2) returns to action on Friday night, when the Red Foxes take on Penn for the first time in program history. Kickoff at Franklin Field in Philadelphia is set for 7 p.m
