Marist Completes Competitive Weekend at MAAC Masters

Heinemann and Layton Reach Men’s Doubles Championship

HAMDEN, CT – The Marist men's and women's tennis teams competed at the MAAC Masters Tournament, hosted by Quinnipiac at the Quinnipiac Athletic & Recreation Center. The Red Foxes turned in several strong performances, highlighted by deep runs from multiple players in both singles and doubles play.

For the men, sophomore Ian Layton and graduate student Jose Catala each reached the semifinals in singles. Layton collected three straight wins—defeating Fairfield's Jessett (6-3, 6-4), Siena's Varella (6-1, 7-6 (5)), and Quinnipiac's Braun Simo (6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 10-7)—before being edged by Rider's Dahlberg in a tight 4-6, 6-2, 10-2 battle. Catala advanced with victories over Sacred Heart's McRae (4-6, 7-5, 10-4) and Quinnipiac's Burridge (6-4, 6-2) before falling to Siena's Koliadynskyi, 7-5, 6-0.

In doubles action, sophomore Gregor Heinemann and Layton made a run to the championship match with wins over Fairfield's Benaibbouche and Kollias (6-4), Niagara's Bhawan and Janiszewski (6-1), and Quinnipiac's Sjoholm and Sciacca (7-5). The pair's strong weekend ended with a 6-3 loss to Fairfield's Acala and Aguilar in the final. Catala and freshman Alejandro Abella Fernandez also earned a 6-3 victory over Sacred Heart before falling in the semifinals.

On the women's side, sophomore Viktoria Lorentzon advanced to the quarterfinals in singles following straight-set wins over Merrimack's Vargas Lopez (6-3, 6-0) and Niagara's Torra (7-6, 6-4) before falling to Fairfield's Herrera, 6-2, 6-4. Freshman Yasmin Asnis battled in a close three-set match against Tang of Mount St. Mary's, dropping a narrow 6-1, 6-7 (6), 11-9 decision, while Clements was edged by Rider's Brown, 6-1, 6-4.

In doubles, senior Cloe Clements Sorde and Asnis teamed up for a 6-4 win over Kotok and Hernandez before falling to Quinnipiac's Renton and Flower, 6-2. Junior Vihana Shresta and Lorentzon also pushed their opening-round opponents from Quinnipiac in a 7-5 loss.
