Second-Half Eruption Lifts Marist Football Over Davidson

Red Foxes Score Game’s Final 27 Points to Prevail on Senior Day

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist University football team earned a 37-10 victory over Davidson in a Pioneer Football League game at Tenney Stadium on Saturday.
The Red Foxes broke open a 10-10 game at halftime with 27 unanswered points in the second half to win their second straight.
 
Summary
  • After a scoreless first quarter, Samer Layous' 36-yard field goal gave Marist a 3-0 lead at the 10:07 mark of the first quarter.
  • Davidson took a 7-3 lead on Coulter Cleland's 11-yard touchdown pass to Ivan Hoyt with 2:30 left in the second quarter.
  • Marst re-claimed the lead just 1:21 later on a seven-yard touchdown run by Carter James. This was set up by a 56-yard pass from Sonny Mannino to Connor Hulstein on the previous play.
  • On the final play of the first half, Christos Tzoumakas' 24-yard field goal tied the score at 10.
  • Marist then erupted for a 20-point third quarter.
    • Mannino's one-yard touchdown run gave the Red Foxes a 17-10 lead on their first drive of the second half, which covered 75 yards in 13 plays in 6:48.
    • Mannino's five-yard touchdown pass to Hulstein put Marist up 24-10 with 3:45 left in the third.
    • On the final play of the quarter, James ran for a 16-yard touchdown. This was set up by a 63-yard pass from Mannino to Lance Martinez on the previous play.
  • Ja'Cyion Cox ran for a 14-yard touchdown with 4:21 to play in the game.

  • Marist rolled up 513 yards of total offense, with 317 passing and 196 rushing.
  • Mannino completed 18 of 24 passes for 317 yards, and he accounted for two touchdowns (one rushing, one passing).
  • Marist had three 90-yard receivers: Martinez (96, on four receptions), Hulstein (92, on four receptions), and Reed Shumpert (90, on a team-high five receptions).
  • Tristan Shannon ran for a team-best 67 yards on 12 carries.
  • Carter James had 71 total yards (48 rushing, 23 receiving) and two rushing touchdowns.
  • Jace Williamson led the defense with eight tackles, and had an interception.
 
Notes
  • This is the first time Marist has won back-to-back games by at least 27 points since 2013.
  • Marist's win total of five is its highest since 2021.
  • Marist amassed over 500 yards of offense for the first time since rolling up 524 yards against Stetson on Sept. 30, 2023.
  • Mannino set a career high for passing yards.
  • James had the third two-touchdown game of his career, and second this season.
  • Hulstein scored a touchdown for the second straight week, and now has six this season.
  • Williamson had an interception for the second straight week.
  • Prior to kickoff, the program honored 22 players, four managers, and two athletic trainers on Senior Day.
