Presbyterian Tops Marist 29–25 in Season Finale

Red Foxes Rally in Second Half but Fall on Late Touchdown

CLINTON, S.C. – The Marist University football team suffered a 29–25 loss at Presbyterian on Saturday in its final Pioneer Football League game of the season. After being shut out in the first half, the Red Foxes surged in the third quarter to take the lead but ultimately came up short.
 
SUMMARY
  • Presbyterian opened the scoring with a 39-yard field goal by Jett Jackson at the 7:35 mark of the first quarter. The Blue Hose added a 41-yard field goal at 7:01 of the second. With 12 seconds left in the half, Collin Hurst connected with Dominic Kibby for a one-yard touchdown to give Presbyterian a 13–0 lead.
  • Marist got on the board with 8:23 remaining in the third. Freshman quarterback Will O'Dell found graduate student tight end Connor Hulstein for a one-yard touchdown, set up by a 29-yard completion to redshirt senior reciever Reed Shumpert on fourth-and-seven.
  • A fumble recovery by graduate student linebacker Garrett Carter led to a 31-yard field goal from freshman kicker Samer Layous, cutting the deficit to 13–10.
  • O'Dell then scrambled for a three-yard touchdown to put Marist ahead 17–16 at the end of the third. The drive included a 60-yard pass to redshirt freshman reciever Lance Martinez.
  • Presbyterian regained the lead on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Hurst to Nathan Levicki with 10:03 left, making it 22–17.
  • Redshirt junior running back Carter James rushed for a two-yard touchdown with 2:11 remaining, and the Red Foxes converted the two-point attempt for a 25–22 lead.
  • The Blue Hose answered with a five-yard touchdown run by Justin Montgomery with 46 seconds left to secure the 29–25 victory.
STATS
  • O'Dell finished 12-for-15 for 180 yards, adding 26 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.
  • Martinez caught four passes for a team-high 84 yards.
  • Graduate student running back Tristan Shannon led the rushing attack with 51 yards on 10 carries.
  • Carter and freshman safety Chase Hatton each recorded eight tackles.
  • Hulstein's touchdown marked his seventh of the season, setting the program's single-season record for touchdowns by a tight end.
