Marist Defeats Holy Cross in Overtime Thriller

Piddock’s Career-High 21 Points and Game-Winner Lift Red Foxes

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist University women's basketball team earned its first win of the season against non-conference opponent Holy Cross, defeating the Crusaders 79-78 in an overtime thriller on Sunday afternoon at McCann Arena.

Senior captain guard Jackie Piddock scored a career-high 21 points, including the game-winner. Freshman forward Justine Henry recorded her second straight double-double with a career-high 21 points and 11 rebounds.
 
FIRST QUARTER
  • Marist took a 12-11 lead at the first media timeout. The Red Foxes came out hot, knocking down 3-of-4 attempts from three-point range, with Henry, senior guard Lexie Tarul and sophomore guard Danielle Williamsen all connecting from deep.
  • Redshirt freshman forward Elle Bruschuk banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the key and Henry followed with an and-one to put Marist up 18-13 at the 2:20 mark.
  • Junior guard Malea Egan converted a driving layup at the buzzer to give Marist a 25-19 lead after one.
  • The Red Foxes shot 8-for-15 from the field and 5-for-7 from distance in the opening frame.
SECOND QUARTER
  • A driving layup from Williamsen gave Marist a 31-29 lead at the media timeout with 4:31 remaining in the half.
  • Henry converted an and-one to become the first Red Fox in double figures with 11 points and give Marist a 36-33 lead at the 1:11 mark.
  • Marist took a 39-37 lead into halftime. Six different Red Foxes knocked down a 3-pointer as the team shot 6-for-12 from deep in the first half.
THIRD QUARTER
  • The Red Foxes opened the half with a quick 5-0 run, forcing a Holy Cross timeout at the 8:15 mark.
  • Marist extended the run to 9-2, taking a 48-39 lead with 5:56 to go in the third.
  • Piddock drained her third 3-pointer of the day to close the quarter, giving Marist a 58-49 lead.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • The Crusaders went on a 9-2 run to start the fourth quarter, forcing a Marist timeout at the 7:32 mark with the Red Foxes up 60-58.
  • Two turnovers in a row allowed Holy Cross to take a 64-62 lead at the 6:03 mark.
  • Tarul knocked down her second 3-pointer and Piddock followed with her fourth to give Marist a 70-66 lead with 4:10 to go.
  • Piddock made a layup with the shot clock expiring to give Marist a 72-70 lead with 1:42 left. 
  • Holy Cross tied the score with 31.2 seconds remaining. Each team got a look on its final possession, but neither converted, sending the game to overtime.
OVERTIME
  • Henry opened the period with an and-one to give Marist a 75-72 lead.
  • Holy Cross made back-to-back baskets to take a 76-75 lead with 1:44 left.
  • Marist got a stop and called timeout down one with 18.9 seconds remaining, but the ensuing possession resulted in an offensive foul on Henry.
  • Holy Cross went 1-for-2 at the line, giving the Red Foxes the ball back down two with 13 seconds left.
  • Piddock drove to her right and converted a layup plus the foul to give Marist a 78-77 lead with eight seconds remaining. The Red Foxes got one final stop to secure the win.
STATS
  • Piddock tied her career high with four 3-pointers and added six rebounds and two steals. She shot 8-for-14 from the field, including 4-for-6 from three-point range to set her career high of 21 points.
  • Henry shot 6-for-11 from the field and 8-for-9 at the line for her new career high of 21 points, along with 11 rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Tarul recorded 13 points, including 2-for-4 from deep, with two rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block.
  • The Red Foxes shot .452 (28-for-62) from the field and .476 (10-for-21) from three-point range, while holding the Crusaders to .420 (29-for-69) overall and .250 (5-for-20) from distance.
