POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Head coach
John Dunne of the Marist University men's basketball team was named a finalist for the Hugh Durham Award on Tuesday.
The award is presented by CollegeInsider.com, and it honors the top mid-major coach in men's college basketball. Dunne is one of 25 national finalists for this prestigious honor.
Dunne has led Marist to a 20-7 overall record and 13-5 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. This is the fifth time in program history that the Red Foxes have won 20 games in a season, and it is the first time in 18 years. Marist started 6-0 in MAAC play for the first time in the Red Foxes' 28 years in the conference this season. On Feb. 3, Marist was ranked #25 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll, marking the first time the Red Foxes were ranked in the poll in program history. Marist's nine-game winning streak in December and January was the program's longest in 18 years. The Red Foxes have excelled in close games this year, posting an 8-1 record in contests decided by three points or less.
Eligible coaches must be in the following conferences/leagues: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast and Western Athletic.
The recipient of the award is determined by a 10-member voting committee, which consists of current and former head coaches, as well as two senior staff members of collegeinsider.com. The winner will be announced in San Antonio, Texas, the site of this year's men's Division I Basketball Championship.
