WORCESTER, MA - On Saturday, the Marist Men's Rowing Team competed in their 10th edition of an ongoing annual dual race with Holy Cross. This dual has included a variety of other crews over the years, including at times Georgetown and Columbia Universities, and this year included Boston University, Temple University, and Hobart College. Marist last won the event in 2019. Racing occurred in Worcester, MA, on Lake Qunisigamond over a 2km race course. The conditions were warm, with partly cloudy skies, a strong 10-15mph cross-head wind, and a moderate chop on the lake.
The Varsity Eight consisted of
Matthew Wright (cox),
Tristan Wistuba (stroke),
James Hadjandreas (7),
William Shockley (6), Reed Livingston (5),
Matthew Roscoe (4),
Austin Thomas (3),
Charlie Latimer (2),
Thomas Graves (bow). In the V8 Race, Marist had a good start but was down by about ½ a boat length coming into the 2nd 500m. BU and Temple got into a furious dual at the front of the pack, with Holy Cross trying to follow, which drew out the field. Marist trailed the next closest Hobart by a boat length at the 1000m mark and held that margin for most of the final 1000m of the course until Hobart opened up several more seats of open water at the finish. The final Times were BU at 6:08, Temple at 6:11, Holy Cross at 6:20, Hobart at 6:28, and Marist at 6:34.
The 2nd Varsity Eight consisted of
Tessa Kurtzman (cox),
Jackson Bower (stroke), Holden Kopscik (7),
Ian Sondhof (6),
Nolan Libby (5),
Connor Tandy (4), Finn Lyons (3), Liam Klemm (2), Adam Wittman (bow). The 2nd varsity eight race went along the same lines as the V8 race before it, but with BU taking a much larger lead in the earlier part of the race and with Marist struggling to keep pace behind. The final times were BU at 6:20, Temple at 6:27, Holy Cross at 6:32, Hobart at 6:41, and Marist at 6:54.
The 3rd Varsity Eight consisted of Evie Disque (cox),
Jack Taddei (stroke),
Dylan Kresge (7),
Mason Roy (6),
Nolan Keane (5),
Nicholas Fracasso (4),
Matthias Topping (3),
Dante Karaiskos (2),
Drew Ngo (bow). The 3v race began to unfold like those before it, with BU taking a significant lead and pushing the speed of the pack. Marist started in the middle of the pack and was laying in 3rd in the early strokes of the race, but Holy Cross laid on a furious pace and gradually overtook both Hobart and Temple. Hobart got into a fierce dual with Holy Cross, and the two crews moved away with Marist roughly one length behind Temple. In the last 500m, the Marist crew started their sprint and began to move up on Temple. Temple could not respond, and over the next 300m, Marist gradually moved up closer and closer, with Temple finishing just one second ahead of Marist at the finish. The final times were BU at 6:17, Holy Cross at 6:31, Hobart at 6:33, Temple at 6:38, and Marist at 6:39.
The 4th Varsity Eight consisted of
Nicholas Jopeck (cox),
Evan Brown (stroke),
Noah Wright (7),
Peter Martinich (6),
Mark Carguello (5),
Jesse Hinkle (4),
Ethan King (3),
Mason Lockowitz (2),
Spencer Crum (bow). This race had only Marist, Holy Cross, and Hobart crews. The race started close for all three crews, but within the first 500m, Holy Cross had already taken over a length of open water lead over Marist and Marist over a length of open water lead on Hobart. The margins continued to expand over the ensuing race, with the finishes being Holy Cross at 6:42, Marist at 6:56, and Hobart at 7:15
Coach's Comments: "This event is one we look forward to every season as the fierce competition represents some very serious cross-conference match-ups. We are not satisfied with being at the back of this pack, but compared to the opponents today, the Marist crew is extremely young. We are excited about what the future holds and to come back next year and do better. We'll be back at work this week with one more race in the regular season and championships beginning to loom!"-Campbell Woods, Head Men's Rowing Coach
The Marist Men will be back in competition next weekend, Saturday, April 26th, at the Spring METS Regatta hosted by Iona in New Rochelle, New York.Â
