STONY BROOK, New York — The Marist men's soccer team kicked off its 2025 campaign, earning a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Stony Brook on Thursday night. A late second-half goal from sophomore defender Evan Marques proved to be the difference, securing the Red Foxes' first win of the season.
The match was a defensive battle from the start, with both teams fighting for control in the midfield. Marist's backline, anchored by senior goalkeeper Jamie Lowell, held firm against several Stony Brook attacks, keeping the Seawolves off the scoreboard. Lowell was particularly impressive, recording five crucial saves to earn the clean sheet.
As the second half progressed, the Red Foxes' offense found its rhythm, generating several promising opportunities. The breakthrough came in the 78th minute when a well-executed passing sequence led to the game's only goal. Marques, assisted by Adriano Iannello and Chris Verheul, fired a shot into the bottom left corner of the net, giving Marist the 1-0 lead.
Stony Brook pushed hard for an equalizer in the final minutes, but the Red Foxes' defense remained resolute, turning away every attempt. Marist outshot the Seawolves 18-16 and held a commanding 6-3 advantage in corner kicks, showcasing persistent offensive pressure throughout the match.
The Red Foxes will look to build on this road victory as they continue their non-conference schedule at home next Thursday, August 28th, against Army at Tenney Stadium.
"Great win opening night on the road in a tough place to play and against a difficult team. Thought it was a mature performance from the group and something to build on for sure. Can't wait to continue putting in work with these guys and for the Red Fox nation to show out for our home opener next Thursday night vs Army." - Coach Matt Viggiano.
