Red Foxes Defeat Scholarship Program for Second Time This Season

STATEN ISLAND, New York – The Marist University football team earned a 21-10 non-league victory at Wagner on Saturday.

Coupled with Marist's season-opening win over New Haven, this marks the first time the Red Foxes have defeated two full scholarship programs in a season.

Summary
  • On Marist's second drive, Sonny Mannino threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Connor Hulstein at the 6:23 mark of the first quarter. This culminated a 10-play, 67-yard drive in 2:35.
  • Wagner tied the game at seven following a two-yard touchdown run by Andre Hines with 37 seconds left in the first quarter. The score remained 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Nicholas Romero's 31-yard field goal gave Wagner a 10-7 lead with 5:22 left in the first half, but Tristan Shannon returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. The score remained 14-10 in favor of Marist at halftime.

  • On Wagner's first drive of the second half, Jalen Carpenter and Nate Robinson Jr. made a stop on fourth-and-one from the Marist 10 to preserve the Red Foxes' four-point lead. Marist maintained its 14-10 advantage after three quarters.

  • Shannon's kickoff return touchdown was the first of his career, and the first by a Red Fox since Glenmour Leonard-Osbourne at Morehead State in 2022.
  • Hulstein has scored a touchdown in all three games as a Red Fox.
  • This is the first meeting between Marist and Wagner since 2008, and Marist's first trip to Staten Island since 2007. The all-time series is now tied, 8-8.

From Coach Willis
"I'm unbelievably proud of this program. That is a credit to our seniors from last year, the Touchdown Club, the Red Fox Club, and our administration."

"That is a gritty, gritty win with an inspired performance on special teams and defense, and the offense pulling the rope when our quarterback went down, including an unbelievable performance by freshman quarterback Will O'Dell. I am proud of us for pulling the rope, for having great mindset, energy, and toughness, and playing together."

"It was also a special day, because for the first time in Marist history, we have beaten two full scholarship opponents in the same season."

"This is a great win for the PFL, these guys invest in the Marist experience, and the community invests in them. This is a great day for a non-scholarship league on the rise, and for a program that is excited to be 1-0 every week. Hell of a job by our guys!"

Up Next
  • After a bye week, Marist returns to action with its Pioneer Football League opener at Butler on Saturday, Sept. 27.
  • Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
