POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's soccer team remained unbeaten and opened Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play in style with a 5-2 victory over Quinnipiac on Saturday night at Tenney Stadium. The Red Foxes used a balanced attack and a dominant second half to improve to 5-0-2 overall and 1-0-0 in the MAAC.
The scoring started early when Kyle Evans buried his first goal of the season in the 10th minute, assisted by Gijs Verheul. Quinnipiac answered less than two minutes later, but Evans struck again in the 34th minute off a setup from Adriano Iannello. A penalty kick conversion by the Bobcats tied the match 2-2 heading into halftime.
Marist seized momentum in the second half. Iannello put the Red Foxes back on top in the 62nd minute with his third goal of the season, assisted by Arion Ulaj. Just over two minutes later, Chris Verheul doubled the lead with a goal assisted by Evans. The Red Foxes capped the night in the 85th minute when Gijs Verheul found the back of the net, assisted by Jonathan Salguero, to seal the 5-2 victory.
Marist outshot Quinnipiac 20-9 and held a 55% possession advantage.
The Red Foxes hit the road for their next MAAC contest at Mount St. Mary on Saturday, September 27 with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
