Men’s Soccer Remains Unbeaten with 2-1 Road Win at Mount St. Mary’s

Goals From Verheul and Ortiz Push Red Foxes to Victory

Emmitsburg, Maryland - The Marist men's soccer team stayed unbeaten to start the season, earning a 2-1 road victory at Mount St. Mary's on Saturday evening at Waldron Family Stadium. With the win, the Red Foxes improve to 6-0-2 overall and 2-0-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, while the Mountaineers fall to 1-4-3 and 1-1-0 in conference.

The Red Foxes struck first in the 16th minute when Gijs Verheul netted his fourth goal of the season. Freshman Jonathan Salguero set up the play with a flick into the box that deflected off a defender and into Verheul's path for the opener.

Marist doubled its advantage in the 31st minute. Ethan Ortiz connected on his first career goal, finishing a cross from Skyler Cunha to put the Red Foxes ahead 2-0.

Mount St. Mary's responded before halftime, converting a penalty in the 38th minute from Eliot O'Neil to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Red Foxes defense held strong throughout the second half, limiting the Mountaineers to just one shot on goal the entire match. Jamie Lowell earned the win in net, improving to 6-0-2 on the season.

Marist outshot the Mountaineers 14-10, with a 5-1 edge in shots on target. Ortiz and Verheul led the way with goals, while Cunha and Salguero each tallied assists.
