JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Marist women's soccer team picked up its first conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon, earning a 2-1 victory on the road at Saint Peter's.
The Peacocks struck first in the fifth minute when Heidi Miles converted to give the hosts an early advantage. The Red Foxes kept the pressure on throughout the opening half, firing 13 shots, and were rewarded just before halftime. In the 44th minute,
Gabby Tirado found the back of the net off a rebound following a save from the keeper to level the match at 1-1 heading into the break.
Marist carried that momentum into the second half and delivered the game-winner in the 79th minute. Tirado once again played a key role, setting up
Julia Loncar, who slotted home her first goal of the season to put the Red Foxes ahead 2-1.
From there, the Marist defense and goalkeeper
Maddy Catalanotti held firm. Catalanotti finished the day with five saves, including several key stops down the stretch to secure the result.
The Red Foxes outshot Saint Peter's 17-11 and generated five corner kicks, using sustained pressure to dictate much of the match. The closing minutes saw Saint Peter's reduced to nine players after a pair of red cards, allowing Marist to see out the victory.
With the win, Marist improves to 2-5-2 overall and 1-0-2 in MAAC play, while Saint Peter's drops to 4-3-2 and 1-2-0 in the league.
