COMMERCE, Texas – The Marist University softball team split its first two games at the Lion Invitational on Friday
In game one, Marist fell by a score of 3-2 to Rhode Island, as the Rams scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. In their second game of the day, the Red Foxes rebounded for a 5-1 victory over host East Texas A&M.
Marist now stands at 4-3 on the season.
- Rhode Island struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first.
- Marist tied the game in the top of the second. Samantha Rogers drew a lead-off walk, and Lily Roumelis followed with her first collegiate homer two batters later to make the score 2-2.
- The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh, when Riley Frickleton's single brought home Hannah Hernandez with the winning run.
- Marist had six hits, with six Red Foxes having one hit apiece. Rogers reached twice with a single and a walk.
- Kaylie DeChicchis started and pitched the first four innings. Ava Metzger went two-plus in relief.
- Rogers walked and scored on an error in the fifth for the Red Foxes' final run.
- Marist totaled six hits, with six Red Foxes each having one hit. Rogers reached safely with a home run and two walks as she went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
- Stella Blanchard (2-1) went the distance in the circle.
- Blanchard tossed a four-hitter and struck out nine while issuing just one walk. She threw 65 of her 97 pitches for strikes.
- Blanchard retired the first nine batters she faced, and she took a shutout into the sixth inning.
- Marist plays back-to-back games on Saturday at the Lion Invitational.
- The Red Foxes will face Southeast Missouri State at 10 a.m. Eastern, followed by Grambling at 12:15 p.m. Eastern.
