Marist Softball Earns First Win Over Nationally-Ranked Team

Red Foxes Defeat #22 South Carolina Before Falling to Queens

COLUMBIA, South Carolina – The Marist University softball team earned its first win over a nationally-ranked team in program history on Saturday.
 
The Red Foxes defeated #22 South Carolina by a score of 2-1 in their first game of the day at Garnet & Black Invitational. In their second game of the day, Marist fell to Queens, 7-1.
 
Game One
  • Marist broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth. Livia Wiltsie worked a leadoff walk, and after a successful sacrifice from Isabella Manory, Sienna Kunze's home run put the Red Foxes in front 2-0.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Karley Shelton's RBI single cut Marist's lead to 2-1.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, South Carolina had the tying run on second and the winning run on first with two outs. But Ava Metzger recorded her eighth strikeout to end the game.
  • Metzger went the distance and allowed just five hits for her second win as a Red Fox.
  • Marist outhit South Carolina, 6-5. Kunze and Annabelle Geiser led the way with two apiece.
 
Game Two
  • Queens scored once in the top of the second, but Marist tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. Sienna Kunze drew a four-pitch walk with one out, and Isabella Manory's triple brought her in.
  • Queens countered with two runs in the top of the third, and then added four in the fourth due in large part to a three-run homer from Lindsay Henson.
  • Stella Blanchard allowed just two hits, one run, and one walk while striking out two in 3.2 innings of relief.
  • Addison Kluck pitched a three-hitter with 14 strikeouts for Queens.

  • Marist closes out play at the Garnet & Black Invitational on Sunday morning against UAB.
