NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. – The Marist men's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over Fordham at Sportsplex New Windsor, using a strong showing in singles play to clinch the match.
Freshman Alejandro Abella Fernandez led the way with a straight-set win at No. 2 singles. Sophomore Anirudh Nallaparaju followed with a strong 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 4, while junior Thomas Bevan secured a key point at No. 5 with a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win. Sophomore Gregor Heinemann sealed the match at No. 6 with a hard-fought 7-6 (11), 6-1 victory. Graduate student Jose Catala and sophomore Ian Layton also competed in singles action.
In doubles, Layton and Bevan teamed up for a 6-3 win at No. 1. Catala and graduate student Dante Despontin competed at No. 2, and Heinemann paired with Abella Fernandez at No. 3.
The win marks Marist's first team victory of the new season.
