EDISON, N.J. - The Marist Univeristy men's and women's tennis teams earned a pair of weekly honors, as sophomore Ian Layton was named Jersey Mike's MAAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week and junior Caterina Assi was selected Jersey Mike's MAAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office.
Layton helped lead the Red Foxes to a 2-0 week with strong performances in both singles and doubles. He teamed with freshman Alejandro Abella Fernandez for 6-4 victories at No. 3 doubles in both matches, including the clinching point in a 4-1 win over Mount St. Mary's. In singles, Layton delivered a dominant 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2 in Marist's 4-0 sweep of Loyola Maryland.
Assi earned her honor after going undefeated at No. 1 singles across two matches for the Red Foxes. She posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory in a 4-0 sweep of Loyola Maryland and followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win in a 4-2 match at Mount St. Mary's.
The Marist tennis teams are back in action on Thurday, March 18 against Morgan State, with the women's match set for 3:30 p.m. and then men's at 6:00 p.m.
