HAMDEN, Conn. – The Marist men's lacrosse team erased a late deficit with a dominant fourth quarter to earn a thrilling 13-12 victory over Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Red Foxes improved to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in MAAC play, overcoming an 11-8 deficit entering the final period.
Marist's offense came alive when it mattered most, outscoring Quinnipiac 5-1 in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback.
Trailing by three heading into the fourth, Marist quickly flipped momentum. Goals from Steven Cain, Peter Murray, and Josh Smith tied the game at 11-11 midway through the quarter.
After Quinnipiac briefly evened the score at 12-12, Sean Mullan delivered the decisive moment. The junior attackman completed his hat trick with 3:11 remaining, giving Marist a 13-12 lead it would not relinquish.
The Red Fox defense held firm down the stretch, highlighted by key saves from goalie Richie Metzger, who finished with 11 stops on the day.
Marist featured a balanced scoring effort with seven different goal scorers. Sean Mullan led the way with three goals, including the game-winner. Steven Cain tallied five points (2 goals, 3 assists), Collin Patrick added four points (1 goal, 3 assists), while Peter Murray, Brady Dolan, and Josh Smith each scored twice.
The Red Foxes totaled 42 shots and 25 shots on goal, matching Quinnipiac's shot total but capitalizing in key moments late.Â
Quinnipiac jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter, but Marist responded with a five-goal second quarter to take a brief lead before heading into halftime tied at 6-6.
The Bobcats surged again in the third, scoring five times to take an 11-8 advantage, setting the stage for Marist's late-game heroics.
Marist will be back in action on Saturday, April 4, when the Red Foxes travel to take on Stony Brook.
