WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Marist University men's tennis team fell to Army West Point, 4-2, on Friday evening.
Marist opened the match by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Sophomore Fateh Singh and sophomore Gregor Heinemann earned a 6-3 victory at No. 2, while sophomore Ian Layton and freshman Alejandro Abella Fernandez secured a 6-1 win at No. 3 to give the Red Foxes the early advantage. The No. 1 doubles match featuring Nicholas Suhanitski and Tom Bevan was tied 4-4 when play was halted.
Army responded in singles play, winning four matches to secure the team victory. Abella Fernandez battled in a three-set match at No. 1 before falling 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Sophomore Anirudh Nallaparaju also pushed his match to three sets at No. 2 but was edged 6-5, 5-7, 6-3. Bevan dropped a tight three-set contest at No. 4, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6, while Heinemann fell 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5.
Graduate student Dante Despontin earned Marist's lone singles point with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6. The No. 3 singles match featuring Layton went unfinished with the score at 6-3, 6-7, 3-2.
