BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Marist Red Foxes capped off the regular season in dramatic fashion on Wednesday afternoon, earning a 15-13 road victory over the Canisius Golden Griffins to secure a share of the MAAC Co-Regular Season Championship for the first time since 2022.
Marist (9-4, 7-1 MAAC) leaned on a balanced offensive attack and timely fourth-quarter execution to outlast Canisius (3-11, 2-6 MAAC) at Demske Sport Complex. The Red Foxes saw eight different goal scorers and were led by a standout performance from Collin Patrick, who finished with four goals and an assist.
The game opened with both teams trading punches, as neither side led by more than one goal in the first quarter. After a 4-4 deadlock through 15 minutes, Marist began to create separation in the second quarter. The Red Foxes scored six times in the frame, including a late man-down goal from Patrick with one second remaining, to take a 10-7 lead into halftime.
Canisius refused to go away, using a five-goal third quarter to claw back and tie the game at 12-12 heading into the final period. Despite being outshot 45-34 and losing the faceoff battle, Marist remained composed in the decisive moments.
The Red Foxes regained control early in the fourth, as Sean Mullan finished off a feed from Drew Anderson to break the tie. Steven Cain followed with a crucial insurance goal midway through the quarter, and after Canisius cut the deficit to one, Peter Murray sealed the win with 1:30 remaining to make it 15-13.
Anderson added three goals and an assist, while Cain contributed two goals and two assists in a well-rounded offensive effort. Jayce Konowitz also chipped in two goals, and Marist totaled five assists on the afternoon.
Defensively, goalkeeper Richie Metzger made 16 saves, including several key stops in the fourth quarter to preserve the lead.
With the victory, Marist clinches a share of the MAAC Regular Season title and carries momentum into the conference tournament, as the No. 2 Red Foxes will take on No. 3 Sacred Heart on Thursday, April 30 in the MAAC Semifinals, hosted by Siena.
