Marist Comes Up Just Short at Lafayette

Mannino Sets Career High for Completions in 13-9 Defeat

EASTON, Pennsylvania – The Marist University football team dropped a non-league game at Lafayette of the Patriot League by a score of 13-9 on Saturday afternoon.
 
Summary
  • Luke Stenson opened the scoring with a 21-yard field goal, which gave Marist a 3-0 lead with 4:47 left in the first quarter.
  • On fourth-and-two from the Marist 8, Jace Williamson stuffed a running play one yard shot of the line to gain to end a drive and preserve Marist's lead.
  • Sonny Mannino's five-yard touchdown pass to Zach Garmont put Marist in front 9-0 with 8:21 left in the second quarter.
  • A pair of field goals by Jack Simonetta, with one coming on the final play of the first half, brought Lafayette to within 9-6 after 30 minutes.
  • After Marist was stopped on a fourth-and-goal, Lafayette took the lead with a 97-yard touchdown drive, which was punctuated by a 38-yard touchdown run by Jason Penza. The Leopards went up 13-9 with 5:03 left in the third quarter, and took a four-point lead to the final period.
  • Marist drove inside the Lafayette 30 twice in the fourth quarter, but was unable to score either time.

  • Hatton and Powell both set career highs for pass break-ups.
  • In addition to leading Marist in receiving, Taylor also blocked a punt in the fourth quarter. The Red Foxes have now blocked a kick in each of their first three games this season, with two punts and one PAT.
  • Marist is now 0-8 against Lafayette all-time. This was the Red Foxes' closest margin of defeat, with the previous closest being 19 in Marist's 2005 season opener.
