January 19, 2001 -- Maureen Magarity, former Our Lady of Lourdes H.S. standout, has joined the Marist College women's basketball team after transferring from Boston College, where she played for the Eagles for the last season and a half.
Magarity, daughter of Marist men's basketball head coach Dave Magarity, started her collegiate playing career at Boston College where she was a member of the 2000 NCAA team. As a freshman, she appeared in 20 games, including the BIG EAST Tournament and the quarterfinal game against Georgetown. Magarity battled with a stress fracture in her right foot for part of the season, but still shot 61.5% from the field and 61.5% from the line. As a sophomore this past season, Magarity has dealt with a foot injury while appearing in six games in which she had a perfect performance from the free-throw line. While a part of the Eagle program, Magarity registered 52 points and 16 rebounds.
"We are very excited to have Maureen join our team," said head coach Kristin Lamb. "She is a great addition to our program both as a student and an athlete. Our first priority is to get her healthy so that she can contribute to her full potential on the court. We expect to see great things from her in the future."
Magarity was a four-year letterwinner on the basketball team while attending Our Lady of Lourdes H.S. in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She finished her high school career with 1,485 points and 855 rebounds after serving as captain of the 1999 State Championship team. After being recognized as the New York State Championship's Most Valuable Player, Magarity was named the 1999 New York State Class B Player of the Year. The WBCA All-American was also noted as a New York Daily News First Team All-Tri State selection in 1998 and 1999 and a USA Today Honorable Mention All-American for the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons.
Magarity will be eligible to play for the Red Foxes starting in the spring 2002 semester.
The Red Fox women's basketball team returns to action tonight at 7:00 p.m. when they face Canisius College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game.
