Poughkeepsie, NY-The Marist College football team dropped its 2001 season opener, 25-23,
falling to visiting Frostburg State University, this evening on Leonidoff Field.
The Bobcats (1-0) never led in the contest, breaking through with 1:23 remaining in the
game when freshman Nick Quisgard connected on a 30-yard field goal, taking a 25-23 lead.
The field goal capped off a nine play, 34-yard drive that began after a free kick resulting
from a safety, which had cut the Marist lead to 23-22.
The Red Foxes (0-1) dominated the early goings, scoring on their first drive, when Sean
Stellato (Salem, Mass.) caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from John Corneliusen
(Atlantic Highlands, NJ), 2:41 into the contest. Frostburg State cut the lead to 7-6
with a touchdown with 1:33 remaining in the first quarter, before Rommel Sumague(Tenafly,
NJ) took the ensuing kickoff 94-yards for a touchdown.
The Red Foxes would take a 20-6 lead with 6:02 remaining in the first half when Alfredo
Riullano (Callicoon, NY) scored from two-yards out. FSU scored with 49 second left in
the half, going to the locker room with the score 20-13, Marist. The Red Foxes struck first
in the second half, converting a 30-yard field goal, their last points of the night, giving
up 12 unanswered points, all in the fourth quarter.
Corneliusen was a perfect 7-7 passing on the night, throwing for 96 yars and a touchdown.
Kevin Bielen (Glen Rock, NJ) was 8-21 for 95 yards and was sacked three times.
Riullano rushed for 92 total yards, while Chris Price (Danbury, Conn.) ran for 47 of
the Red Foxes 141 rushing yards.
Marist led the way in nearly every offensive category, gaining 332 yards to the 257-yard
output of the Bobcats. Marist had possession of the ball for 35:42, Frostburg State, 24:18,
and had four more first downs (19-15) then the Bobcats.
FSU quarterback, Grant Burrough, threw for 176 yards on 20-34 passing and rushed for 17
yards. DeNelle Hale led the Bobcats with 67 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Marist will return to action on Saturday, September 15th, when they host Metro Atlantic
Athletic Conference (MAAC) Foe, LaSalle University on Leonidoff Field. Game time is set
for 7:00 pm.
