Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Take Early Lead After Day One of the MAAC Championships

Baltimore, MD---The Marist College men's and women's swimming and diving teams took an early lead after the first day of competition, at the 2002 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships held at the Loyola College Aquatic Center. The men's team has tallied 258 points over current runner-up Rider (171), and the women have 235 points over second place Loyola (193) and defending 2001 champion Rider (170).

On the men's side, three school records fell, as well as two conference records, as the Red Foxes had five first place finishes out the day's five events. Marist started out the evening in record setting fashion, as the relay team of Nick Lakin (Fairport, NY), Jeffrey Paul (Meadowbrook, PA), Ricky Kapusta (Stamford, Conn.), and David Dobbins (Rochester, NY) claimed the victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:22.95), which was a school and MAAC Conference record. Dobbins was victorious in the 500-yard freestyle (4:35.90), and Kapusta touched the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle (21.18). Freshman Matthew Castillo (Jamaica, NY) swam his way to a new school record mark in the 200-yard individual medley (1:51.41), erasing the old standard of 1:54.20. The Red Foxes then wrapped up the first day of competition in the 400-yard medley relay in a first place finishing, new school and conference record time of 3:23.14, with the foursome of Trevor Charles (Middletown, Conn.), Castillo, Lakin, and Dobbins.

In the women's competition, two school records fell, in addition to one conference record, as they swam and dove to four first place finishes. The Red Fox 200-yard freestyle relay team of Jennifer Gelsomino (Harrison, NY), Sarah McKinney (Schaumburg, IL), Kristen Schnitzer (Bronxville, NY), and Jennifer Meyer (Fairport, NY) claimed the winning title in a time of 1:37.43, which was a new school and MAAC Conference record. Gelsomino turned in a winning performance in the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.55), while Meyer sprinted to victory in the 50-yard freestyle (24.37) handing in a new school record, bettering her record of 24.71 from last year. On the boards, Missy Gifford (Glens Falls, NY) had the winning score on the 1-meter dive (222.95).

The Red Foxes continue the swimming and diving action through Saturday, February 23rd. Tomorrow's preliminaries begin at 10:00 a.m.
