Red Fox Swimming and Diving Begin Competition at ECAC Championship

Pittsburgh, PA---The Marist College men's and women's swimming and diving teams began competition today at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships.

After the first day the men are in second place, registering 133.50 points, trailing behind 2001 defending ECAC champion University of Maryland-Baltimore County (217.50 points). The Red Foxes are leading over third place Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival, Rider University who has tallied 83 points. The women are currently tied for 14th place with West Virginia University, both compiling 20 points. The Red Foxes are ahead of William and Mary (16 points) and Bucknell University (14 points).

Highlights on the women's side began with the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Jennifer Gelsomino (Harrison, NY), Sarah McKinney (Schaumburg, IL), Kristen Schnitzer (Bronxville, NY), and Jennifer Meyer (Fairport, NY), who placed 11th in a time of 1:40.31. Marist improved on last year's ECAC performance, where they touched the wall in 1:40.90. Meyer continued to score points in the Red Foxes' effort, as she placed 13th in the 50-yard freestyle (24.67). In the final event of the day, the 400-yard medley relay, the team of Meyer, Cynthia Rowley (Holbrook, NY), Gelsomino, and Schnitzer finished 15th, with a time of 4:06.68.

In the men's competition, the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Nick Lakin (Fairport, NY), Jeffrey Paul (Meadowbrook, PA), Ricky Kapusta (Stamford, Conn.), and David Dobbins (Rochester, NY) came in second place with a time of 1:23.62. In his second event of the day, the 500-yard freestyle, Dobbins touched the wall in eighth place (4:45.21). In the 200-yard individual medley Matthew Castillo (Jamaica, NY), Trevor Charles (Middletown, Conn.), and Robert Dunn (Pittsford, NY) finished second (1:52.91), seventh (1:55.81), and 14th (1:57.75) respectively. In the 50-yard freestyle Lakin finished in ninth place (21.35), followed by teammates Kapusta and Paul, who finished 12th (21.61) and 15th (21.80). In the final competition of the evening, the 400-yard medley relay, the team of Charles, Castillo, Lakin, and Dobbins completed the race in third place (3:26.73).

The Red Foxes begin the second day of the swimming and diving action tomorrow morning, with the preliminaries set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
