Poughkeepsie, NY---The Marist College women's water polo team (2-7) was defeated this afternoon by Villanova and Iona, with scores of 12-10 and 9-3 respectively, to close out play in the final day of the Marist Water Polo Tournament.
In the game against Villanova the Wildcats led 7-5, and the Red Foxes continued to trail 8-5, with an Ellen Howe goal at 4:35 in the third quarter. Marist then lessened the deficit with goals from Carolyn Rosler (Blue Bell, PA) and Alyson Fiorillo (Pottsville, PA), bringing the score to 8-7. With the score held at 9-8 going into the fourth and final quarter of regulation, Villanova went on a 3-0 scoring run to secure the victory. Fiorillo and Delaine Cole (LaMiranda, CA) led the Red Foxes in scoring with three goals apiece. In addition, Rosler tallied two goals for Marist.
In goal, Red Fox netminder Liz Sovern (Sandy Hook, Conn.) had eight saves in the Red Fox effort.
Earlier this afternoon against Iona, the Gaels went unanswered for six goals in the first three quarters of play, until Fiorillo put the Red Foxes on the board with 5:22 remaining in the fourth quarter. Jen Meyer (Fairport, NY) and Rosler each scored the remaining two goals for Marist. Jocelyn Chapman led Iona's scoring charge, with four goals on the match.
Sovern led in saves 6-5, as the goalkeeper for Marist.
The Red Foxes return to action on Friday, March 22nd, as they take on Whittier College in Whittier, CA. The game is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
