Poughkeepsie, NY - Marist College head men's basketball coach Dave Magarity announced today that Red Fox standout guard, Sean Kennedy, has been invited to the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, April 3rd-6th, in Virginia. Kennedy becomes the first Marist player since Alan Tomidy to receive and invitation to the Portsmouth Invitational.
"This is a great honor for Sean, and I am excited for the opportunity that this affords him," said Magarity. "He has earned this by virtue of a great senior year and an outstanding career here at Marist."
Kennedy, a native of Northport, NY, had a career year as a senior, dishing out a career-high 222 assists, ranking him third in the nation. As well as being the catalyst for the Marist offense, Kennedy provided it as well, leading the team with his 14.7 points per game, and tallying a career-best 411 points on the year. He also tallied a tam-best 53 steals. Kennedy also pulled down 155 rebounds on the year, second on the squad, averaging 5.5 boards a game. The Red Foxes starting point guard, Kennedy played in all 28 games this season, all starts, and led the team with his 36.1 minutes played per game.
Kennedy highlighted his season with two triple-doubles. He recorded his first on January 5th, scoring 18 points, pulling down 10 boards and dishing out 10 assists. He repeated the rare feat on February 11th, as he scored 14 points and added 10 rebounds and 10 assists. On the year Kennedy recorded eight other double-doubles, including a 20-point, 12-assist effort in his final collegiate game. In the final home game of his career, he scored 11 points and dished out a single-game school record 17 assists, eclipsing the former record, 16, set during the 1985-86 season. He also scored a career-high 26-points against Rider on February 17th. He scored in double-digits in 24 of his games played, eclipsing 20 points on seven occasions. He dished out 10 or more assists 10 times, and had seven or more in 18 games played.
A graduate of St. Dominic's High School, Kennedy completed his Marist career with his name in numerous places in the all-time record books. He eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in his final game, finishing his collegiate career with 1,007 points, 20th on the all-time scoring list. He also dished out 670 assists, second all-time, and the first player in program history to record over 1,000 points and 500 assists for their career. He leaves as the third most proficient thief in program history, with 212 steals, and ranks fifth all-time in three point field goals made, with 123. His career three-point field goal percentage, 34.8 percent, ranks him eighth in program history.
