Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College softball team was swept by Stony Brook University in a doubleheader losing 2-0 and 8-5 earlier today at the Gartland Commons Athletic Fields.
In game one the two teams managed only two hits a piece in the first five innings as neither team scored a run. Stony Brook then broke through in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from Amanda Staschuk to make the score 1-0. Cass Broadwater then added a home run in the seventh inning for the final 2-0 margin.
Junior Nicole Fox (Temecula, CA) (1-8) pitched well for Marist allowing six hits over seven innings, but was charged with the loss. Stephanie Poetzsch (15-11) struck out nine on her way to the win for Stony Brook, becoming the school's career wins leader (32) in the process.
In game two the Seawolves tailed five first inning runs, three coming from a home run by Mary Carpenter to jump ahead 5-0. The Red Foxes then railed for two runs in the third inning, cutting the deficit to 5-2 on an RBI single by freshman Nichole Rawson (Palmdale, CA) and freshman Bryanne Thitchener (Poughkeepsie, NY) who was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Stony Brook added a run in the top half of the fifth, before Marist plated two more runs in the bottom half of the inning on RBI singles from Thitchener and freshman Barbara Leasure (Fairless Hills, PA) to make the score 6-4. Lisa Notaro's two-run homer in the sixth put the Seawolves ahead 8-4. Rawson then added her sixth home run of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh to provide the final outcome.
Lindsay DeLaRosa (5-10) was on the winning end for the Seawolves, while Rawson (5-7) who relieved freshman Danielle Blake (Doylestown, PA) in the first inning was the pitcher of record for the Red Foxes.
Rawson had three hits and Thitchener two hits in the game for Marist which now stands at 9-24-1 overall and 3-5 in the MAAC. Stony Brook now has a record of 20-21 on the season and 5-9 in the America East.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Wednesday, April 24th at 3:30 PM with a double header at Hofstra. The team will not return home until Saturday, May 4th against Niagara at 12:00 PM.
