Flushing Meadows, NY---The Marist College women's tennis team defeated Niagara University, 4-3, to finish third at the 2002 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships. With third place, the Red Fox women's tennis team improves on last year's seventh place showing.
The Red Foxes earned the doubles point, notching wins at number one and three doubles. The number one doubles twosome of Diana Perachio (Newtown, Conn.) and Amanda Doetsch (Freehold, NJ) topped Milena Matijevic and Colleen Willick, 9-7. At number three doubles, Courtney McGeever (Wickliffe, OH) and Jennifer Edwards (Baldwinsville, NY) defeated Colleen Carey and Kendra Daigler, 8-4.
In singles play McGeever was victorious at number three singles over Willick, winning the first set 6-3, and the second set 4-3, with the remainder of the match suspended due to rain. Kara Bliss (Burnt Hills, NY) earned the victory at number five singles against Mullawney, 6-2, 6-1. At number six singles Kathryn Szymanski (Scituate, MA) defeated Golden, 6-1, 6-2.
In other honors, Bliss was named to the 2002 MAAC Women's Tennis All-Academic Team. In order to receive the accolade, a student athlete must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 on a 4.0 scale. As a senior at Marist, Bliss is a Psychology/Special Education Major.
The Red Foxes wrapped up their season compiling an overall record of 13-6, improving on last year's record of 7-13.
