Poughkeepsie, NY-The Marist College women's tennis team competed well in the first day of the Army Invitational, the largest college tennis tournament in the East, held in West Point, NY.
In the first round of singles competition, Yana Krugly (Staten Island, NY) defeated Lorena Parra of Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-3, 7-5. Diana Perachio (Newton, Conn.) beat Allison Kelly of Hofstra in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Sophomore Amanda Doetsch (Freehold, NJ) only needed two sets to win her match over Erin Reeves of Fairfield, 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Yana Tikhonko (Brooklyn, NY) won her first collegiate match over Rebecca Feldman of Army, 7-5, 6-1.
In doubles play, Courtney McGeever (Wickliffe, OH) and Kathryn Szymanski (Scituate, Mass.) won their first round match by default over Hofstra. In quarterfinal action McGeever and Szymanski defeated Monmouth's Anneabeth Bailey and Kelly Phoebus, 8-3, to advance to the semifinals tomorrow. In other doubles action, the rookie team of Astrid Browne (Brooklyn, NY) and Tara Dolan (Hopewell Junction, NY) lost to Lauren Leftin and Christina Lucin of Army, 8-0. In the consolation round, Browne and Dolan defeated the doubles team of Long Island University, 8-3.
In the round of 16, played later in the day, Krugly lost her match to Milena Matijevic of Niagara, 6-0, 6-1. Perachio lost her match in three sets to Maria Anorga of Lehigh, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4.
The two Red Foxes who made it to the quarterfinals were Doetsch and Tikhonko winning their respective matches. Doetsch beat fifth seeded Tanya Sichko of Bucknell, 6-2, 6-4, while Tikhonko defeated Loren Zetti of St. John's, 6-2, 6-1.
Marist will continue play tomorrow, Saturday, September 14th, in the Army Invitational.
