MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) - Brandon Voorhees scored 20 points to lead Central Michigan past Marist 71-67 on Sunday.

The Chippewas led by as many as 19 points in the first half, but Marist closed the gap to 40-29 at halftime and cut the lead to just five points early in the second half.

Marist trailed by four points with under 30 seconds left and made five attempts at 3-pointers, but all of them missed.

Carl Hood led Marist with 19 points and Will McClurkin scored 12 points with 10 rebounds.

Sunday's contest was Central Michigan's first home game since junior walk-on player Brent Edwards died on Tuesday from injuries he suffered in a car accident the day before.

When the accident occurred, the rest of the Chippewas were at the EA Sports Maui Invitational in Hawaii. The players returned to Michigan on Friday and went directly to Edwards' visitation at a funeral home in Flushing and then attended the funeral on Saturday.
