Football Drops MAAC Finale 31-6 To Duquesne

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College football team dropped a 31-6 decision to visiting Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Football League foe Duquesne University, this afternoon on Leonidoff Field. The Red Foxes fall to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in MAAC play, while the Dukes improve to 6-3 and finish league play undefeated at 5-0.

Marist held the Dukes scoreless for the first 19 minutes of play until Mike Hilliard scored the first touchdown of the game on a 10-yard run. A field goal with 2:29 left in the first half made it 10-0, and Duquesne put an insurance score on the board with :09 left in the first half when Neil Loebig tossed his first of three touchdowns, 27 yards to Loran Cooley.

The Red Foxes held the Dukes scoreless in the third quarter, before Loebig found Michel Warfield for seven-yard TD strike. Loebig finished the Dukes scoring 4:50 later when he hit Yardon Brantley from 28-yards to make the score 31-0.

Marist managed 308 yard of offense, capped by a one-yard touchdown lunge by James Luft with 2:22 left in the game. Luft was 17-29 for 148 yards assign on the day, and rushed for 14 yards as well. Alfredo Riullano led the Red Foxes running attack with 84 yards on 20 carries, and added four catches for 13 yards on the day as well. Rookie Brad Rowe had 26 yards on six carries, as well as returning three kicks for 76 yards in the contest.

Guy Smith made two receptions for 24 yards, and ended with 804 yards for the year, the most in a single-season by a Marist receiver. Eight different Red Foxes caught a pass on the day, including three by Tim Traynor, 31 yards, and Brad Newton, 29 yards.

Rookie Barry "Huck" Correia enjoyed his best day of his young career, leading all tacklers with 14, eight of them solo efforts. The defensive back also had a pair of pass deflections and a forced fumble. Senior John Healy, the school's I-AA career leader in tackles had seven stops, two for a loss of yardage, and will need 10 tackles in the season final to reach 100 for the year.

Loebig finished 23-35 for 354 yards, three touchdowns and an interception to lead the Dukes attack. He connected with five different receivers including five strikes to Warfield, for a game-high 120 yards. Hilliard led all rushers with 159 yards on 26 carries.

Marist will close out the regular season on Saturday, November 15th, when it hosts non-conference foe Central Connecticut State University at 1:00 pm. Prior to kickoff the Red Foxes will honor the class of 2004 with a ceremony on Leonidoff Field.
