TOWSON, Md. - Junior righthander Jason Summerlin pitched out of a ninth inning jam as
Towson University (6-4) won its sixth game in its last eight contests
with a 7-6 non-league victory over Marist (6-4) at Schuerholz Park on
Monday afternoon.
The Tigers, who entered the ninth inning with a 7-3 lead,
saw that lead all but disappear in the Red Foxes' ninth inning rally.
Junior Jimmy Board and pinch hitter Kevin Grauer led off the inning with singles and an error by Tiger second
baseman Shane Justis on a double play ball
scored a run and put runners on the corners. After an RBI single by
senior Matt Griffiths cut the lead to 7-5, Summerlin
came in to relieve junior Jason Seger.
Summerlin retired senior John McGorty
on a fly ball but a base hit by sophomore Keith Brachold cut the deficit to 7-6. Summerlin then pitched out of the mess by
retiring freshman Matt Clark on a foul pop up. He
closed out the game by getting freshman Bryan Towler to
ground out to Justis.
The Red Foxes, who went to the NCAA Tournament last season
as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champions, took a 3-0 lead in
the first inning when senior Tim Allen hit a
two-run homer.
The Tigers cut the lead to 3-1 in the third inning as senior
third baseman Tom Trela led off with a
double and scored on an infield grounder.
Towson took a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning when freshman
Casper Wells and Trela led off with
singles. Two outs later, junior first baseman Mike Costello blasted a three-run homer to give Towson a
4-3 lead. It was his third home run of the season.
In the eighth inning, Costello's double helped the Tigers
score three more runs. Junior shortstop Brian McKenna followed with a two-run double to make it a 6-3
game. A run-scoring single by Wells gave the Tigers a 7-3 lead. As it
turned out, the Tigers would need every run.
Senior righthander John Caslin
earned the win for Towson. He allowed seven hits and three runs while
pitching 7.2 innings, the longest outing of his college career. Caslin
is now 2-0 on the season.
Costello led the Tigers' ten-hit attack with two extra base
hits while Wells also had two singles.
Allen went three-for-three with two RBI for Marist as the
Red Foxes had 12 hits.
