Jamaica, NY - The St. John's softball team swept a doubleheader, 6-2 and 6-2, against Marist College this afternoon in games played at Red Storm Field in Jamaica, N.Y. The Red Storm improve to 13-13, while the Red Foxes fall to 1-12.
In the first game, the Red Storm jumped out to an early lead scoring three runs in the first two innings. Senior Alesha Argeras continued her torrid hitting, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and hitting her fifth homerun of the season.
Senior Jessica Shepherd and sophomore Jillian Sandoval each went 2-for-3 for St. John's. Shepherd had an RBI and a run scored, while Sandoval posted two RBI and a run scored. Senior Courtney Fitzgerald (11-7) went the distance for the Red Storm, giving up two runs on five hits, and eight strikeouts.
Elizabeth Moyer (Scio, NY) took the loss for Marist, pitching four innings, while giving up three earned runs on eight hits, and had one strikeout. Danielle Blake (Doylestown, PA) came on in relief and pitched two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and striking out two. Bryanne Thitchener (Poughkeepsie, NY) led the Red Foxes at the plate, going 1-2 with an RBI double.
In the second game, St. John's used a three run second inning to overpower Marist before the game was called in the sixth inning due to darkness. Shepherd had another impressive game at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBI, two runs scored and knocking her first career homerun. Sophomore Meghan Allman picked up her second win of the season, pitching four innings, allowing one run on five hits, and two strikeouts.
Nichole Rawson (Palmdale, CA) went the distance for Marist, pitching five innings and giving up six runs on nine hits, while striking out one. Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, NY) went 3-4 with a run scored, while Kathleen McEvily (White Plains, NY) and Bridget Hurlman (Yonkers, NY) had two hits apiece.
The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, March 29th, when they travel to Riverdale, NY for a doubleheader against MAAC opponent Manhattan, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
