New Rochelle, NY - The Marist College water polo team fell to Iona, 9-1, in a MAAC Water Polo League contest at the Mulcahy Center on Friday. The Red Foxes fall to 3-9 on the season, and are now 1-2 in MAAC play. Iona, who is ranked sixth in the CWPA Top 10 Poll, won their ninth match in a row to improve to 9-1, with a 5-0 record in the conference.
The Gaels struck early, taking a 3-0 lead after the first quarter of play. Kaitlin Kelley scored two of the three goals to lead the Iona attack.
Iona achieved the same feat in the second, scoring three more times to take a 6-0 lead at the half.
Shannon McGady added another goal for the Gaels with 5:06 to play in the third, before Ashley Woerner (Hinsdale, IL) put Marist on the board at the 4:48 mark. Iona would add another goal in the third, and one more in the fourth to seal the win.
Amanda Long (Stockton, CA) had 13 saves for Marist, while Jennifer Shoemaker collected 10 for the Gaels.
The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, March 29th, when they travel to Brooklyn Heights, NY to take on Hartwick at 11:45 a.m. and Utica at 7:45 p.m. The matches will be held at St. Francis College (NY).
